Neither Hurricanes Mitch nor Monica could keep the Clinton administration from its self-appointed food safety rounds the past couple of months. The administration signaled that food safety was a continuing priority when it proposed substantial increases for food safety programs in the fiscal 1999 budget. (See "Andy's Angle," March 1999, page 47). The new Congress has lost no time in picking up the ball: At the end of February, U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., introduced a bill addressing the simmering issue of imported-food safety, and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, was considering a bill as well.
