Making whisky is a time consuming process. Up to 50 or more whiskies can be used in one blend and an error such as using a 30 year old whisky instead of a 5 year old can be very expensive, so good control is essential. Over £15 million has been invested by Allied Distillers on process control technologies at their facility in Dumbarton. This includes an intelligent system that utilises the Allen-Bradley 193-E3 Plus electronic motor protection relays and a DeviceNet open network. It also uses preventative maintenance tools and diagnostic capabilities provided by the overloads to help reduce downtime at the plant.
