Appetite for Skills reaches Sheffield Hallam

The latest Appetite for Skills day took place at Sheffield Hallam on 18 March. Around 60 students aged between 15 and 17 were in attendance to listen to presentations by apprentices in the food industry, as well as experience hands-on engineering problems from leading engineering companies working in the food and drink industry. The presentation was given by James Kimani, Graduate Engineer and Kamanasish Dutta, on placement, both with Mondelez. Both Kimani and Dutta have a strong academic STEM background before attending university to complete a MEng in Chemical Engineering. Their presentation hit several salient issues that students may not have been aware of, from the industry contributing the greatest gross value added of all manufacturing industries at £26.4 billion and that 170,300 jobs in food engineering have been forecast between 2010 and 2020. This number is vast, especially when compared to aerospace manufacturing, a sector with 15,300 jobs forecast between 2010 - 2016, or automotive manufacturing, with 27,000 jobs forecast between 2010 - 2016.
