When James Watt invented the steam engine in 1775, he laid the groundwork for the first industrial revolution in the early 19th century. The second industrial revolution, also known as the technological revolution took place from the end of the 19th century to World War I, and saw the introduction of electric power and mass production techniques. At the end of the last century, we experienced a third industrial revolution with the advent of digitalisation. Now, experts believe we are on the cusp of a fourth industrial revolution that will completely change the way factories work in future.
