The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) on Oct. 26 announced a finding that red meat and processed meat are "probably carcinogenic to humans." As expected, meat constituencies railed against the report. However, after the media uproar that followed that report, WHO put a little distance between itself and the semi-autonomous IARC, saying, "The latest IARC review does not ask people to stop eating processed meats but indicates that reducing consumption of these products can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer." The statement indirectly acknowledged "the place of processed meat and red meat within the context of an overall healthy diet."
