Island Wings

It's going to be a busy year for Isle of Wight Airport at Sandown. The delightful all-grass aerodrome - which opened in 1935 - is owned by Dick Steeie and he is determined to turn it into a working and recreational facility for all. Dick and his family have lived on the Island for many years and an aerodrome was certainly not on his 'shopping list'. However, when he heard that it was available, he couldn't resist. It became apparent very quickly just how many members of the public visited, and a quick survey revealed that "50,000 people a year walk in and watch the aeroplanes". This had led to a major change on the skyline at Sandown - the 'Aviator Bar and Restaurant' which will be officially opened on May 30.
