Warrior Buccaneers

Just as South Africa was the only export customer for Britain's Avro Shackleton, so it was with the British-designed and built HS Buccaneer. The deal was part of the 'Simonstown Agreement', which gave the Royal Navy access to the naval base of that name near Cape Town in exchange for assistance with weaponry, including a batch of 16 Buccaneer S.50s. South Africa had recognised a need for a high-speed maritime strike aircraft during the early 1960s. The Buccaneer S.2 was an ideal solution, though it was to be modified slighdy for operations in the tropics.
