"OK, chaps, help yourselves - there's no fighter escort!" The words rang out loud and clear over the radio. This was the raid on the North East of England portrayed Hollywood-style in the film The Battle of Britain. As with all films which set out to tell a story 'as it was', there are bound to be some historical errors. So what really did happen on August 15, 1940? The operation that day was known as NORTHERN FLANK, but the Luftwaffe was to remember it as 'Black Thursday'.
