Having had starring roles in the RAF's Exhibition Flight, Supermarine Spitfire XVIs TB382 and TE311 were moved to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's hangar at Coningsby, Lines, in January 2001. They had been stored in one of the hardened aircraft shelters at the base since October 1999, but the move ensured they would be put to more productive use with the BBMF. Their Rolls-Royce Merlins were soon removed and one was refurbished for use in another BBMF aircraft. The idea was to use the two Mk.XVIs for spares reclamation in order to keep the Flight's other charges airworthy.
