An Otter among the Volcanoes

Many pilots in New Zealand are lucky enough to be able to make their livelihood flying tourists from A to B or to fly them over the beautiful landscape. Some of these pilots operate over the volcanic heart of New- Zealand with Rotorua-based Volcanic Air Safaris. Recently a fine addition to their fleet arrived in the form of a de Havilland of Canada Otter. This is not just the first Otter of this company; it is currently the only one of its type in the country. In total DHC built 466 Otters, the bulk of which were delivered to military customers. Delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 24, 1954, the aircraft that is now ZK-VAS served them until 'demob' in April 1977. (See the panel for its full pedigree.)
