Into 'The Bag'

Throughout 1941, the squadrons of Fighter Command had carried out intensive cross-Channel operations against the enemy. These took many forms, from small-scale 'Rhubarbs' looking for targets of opportunity to much larger 'Circus' operations where small numbers of bombers under massive escort penetrated into targets in France and the Low Countries. There were also pure fighter sweeps, code-named 'Rodeo' - all aimed at tempting the Luftwaffe into the skies. (See the January issue for more on operations code words - ED.).
