'Flying Fishcart'

On display in the SAAF Museum's Hangar 8 at the Ysterplaat Airshow 2005, Cape Town, South Africa, on December 3, was the ongoing restoration project of Douglas Dakota Ⅲ 6832. This aircraft has a most unusual history; it was involved in a 'fishjacking' in 1952! The story concerns a coelacanth that was caught alive off the Comoros Islands in the western Indian Ocean in December 1952. Scientists had believed the coelacanth became extinct about 70 million years ago. Then one was caught off the coast of South Africa in 1938, followed by this second example 14 years later.
