Avro's Vulcan features strongly in Philip Oliver's portfolio. An Air Cadets trip to Coningsby, Lincolnshire, in 1962 with the V-Force working up and the Cuban missile crisis focussing attention, left a lasting impression on Philip.Invited to go into the cockpit was "like walking into a spaceship". Camping out in tents beside the active runway, with freguent practice alerts involving four of the deltas thundering past and screaming into the skies, has formed a lasting image in his memory.
