A special event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Alliott Verdon Roe's Triplane making its first flight took place at Walthamstow Marshes, near London, on July 12. This machine was the first British-designed, built and piloted powered aircraft when it took to the air from the same location on July 13,1909. (See Ton-up in the July issue.)rnEric Verdon Roe, grandson of the pioneering pilot, was the special guest at the recent celebration, which also included a soon-to-be-airworthy replica of the Triplane. The latter was built over three years by a team of former BAe Systems employees, led by Mike Taylor and Peter Teagle. Every attempt was made to make it as close to the original as possible, including obtaining a JAP engine.
