Born to an Army officer serving with the Scottish infantry in Egypt, James Cassels, always known as Jock, was brought up in Ayrshire and for two years served with 137 Sguadron of the Air Defence Cadet Corps and reached the rank of Flight Sergeant. As soon as he was old enough, he volunteered for aircrew duties with the RAF and just after his 19th birthday, in April 1941, he was called up and before long was at 4 Initial Training Wing at Paignton, Devon.
