After liberation, France turned to the ubiquitous Douglas C-47 Skytrain and licence-built Junkers Ju 52s to act as transports for the country's re-activated air arms. By 1947 there was a dire need to replace these venerable types. A design competition was launched in 1947, with Nord triumphing over the designs offered by Breguet and Sud-Ouest.rnWith a twin-boom layout similar to Fairchild's C-82 Packet, the Nord rn2500 first flew on September 10, 1949 - ironically five years to the day after its US counterpart's maiden flight. Initially, it was fitted with l,600hp (1,193kW) Gnome-Rhone 14Re radials.
