Piloting a flimsy biplane of his own design, Geoffrey de Havilland made his first, tenuous, foray into the air from Seven Barrows in Hampshire, a stone's throw from the family home, in December 1909. He overstressed it and it plummeted to earth from around 15ft (4.5m). Undaunted, Geoffrey set about what became known as Biplane No.2 and a magnificent dynasty was born. In the second machine, Geoffrey made his first sustained flight on September 10, 1910. The War Office bought this machine, and its designer gained Royal Aero Club Certificate No.53 on February 7, 1911.
