It was early 1969, I plucked up the courage and me, my acne and my Kodak Instamatic camera went through the open gate on Banks Road, on the western perimeter of Liverpool's Speke Airport. A dash across the concrete, a skilful jink alongside the aero club, then another sprint into the huge art-deco main hangar and suddenly I stood transfixed. There was a Mosquito, in worn camouflage, haemorrhaging oil into giant drip trays. It was gob-smacking! The airport police van crept up unnoticed and the guy that accosted me was huge... I pointed out that the gate was open, but it made no odds. Scolded and back on Banks Road I was determined to find out more.
