Types produced by Curtiss tended to adopt the names of birds. However, whoever was deciding the title for each type seems to have lacked originality: when the 'Beast' arrived, as the SB2C was later nicknamed, it was the third Curtiss type to carry the moniker Helldiver.rnIn 1928, the Buffalo, New York, company flew the first of what became the F8C family of dive-bomber biplanes. This was the first Helldiver, named after a member of the grebe family native to North America. Then came the retractable undercarriage biplane SBC series in 1933. Designated a scout bomber. This was also the Helldiver.
