RAAF Bostons

One small correction to Jim Grant's excellent insight into the operations of 22 Squadron's Bostons/Havocs (July issue). The 'potted' history of the unit states that it operated the Boston and later the Havoc until disbanding in August 1946. In fact, 22 Squadron completed its wartime operations flying the Beaufighter in what many pilots believed were exceptionally unlucky circumstances. As part of 77 Wing, 1st Tactical Air Force, the 16 Bostons of 22 Squadron moved to Wama strip on Morotai Island on November 17,1944. It commenced operations the next day and was soon ranging as far afield as the Philippines. From late October and through November, Japanese Army Air Force bombers of the 7th Air Division, operating on night missions through Macassar in the Celebes in support of Operation sho-go, constantly harassed the Allied rear positions.
