Sir Roy Welensky, Prime Minister of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, quietly announced in early 1962 that the Royal Rhodesian Air Force would be getting "the Hunter Hawk". A slip of the tongue, he was of course referring to the elegant Hawker Hunter. In March 1962 an order for a dozen F.6s, refurbished to FGA.9 standard, was placed by the nation. The first were ferried out from the UK before the end of the year, with the final pair being delivered in May of the following year. All were issued to 1 Squadron at Thornhill near Gweru.
