When news came that North Korean armed forces had crossed the 38 th parallel at 04:00 hours on June 25, 1950, and invaded their southern neighbour, the US Navy's carrier Valley Forge (CV-45) was at anchor in Hong Kong. The crew had been enjoying their spell of rest and recuperation but their response to the call was almost instantaneous. Valley Forge set sail at full speed the next day and headed straight for Subic Bay in the Philippines to receive the necessary provisions, fuel and ordnance and from there the destination was the waters off North Korea.
