When delivered to 74 Squadron in February 1939, Supermarine Spitfire I K9871 was camouflaged in Dark Green and Dark Earth on the upper surfaces, with Silver on the lower surfaces. The 35in (89cm) Type A1 roundels with yellow outer rings were applied to the fuselage, along with 56in roundels on the top of the wing and 50in versions on the bottom wing. No fin flash was carried. No.74 Squadron was allocated the codes 'JH', applied forward of the roundel on the port side and aft on the starboard side in Medium Sea Grey.
