News soon got about that on April 17,1943 an intact Focke-Wuif Fw 190 had landed at West Mailing. A string of visitors began to arrive, among the first being Gp Capt 'Sailor' Malan, CO at Biggin Hill, followed by high-ranking officers from the Air Ministry and the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough. After being flown by an RAF pilot for assessment, the verdict was that the 190 was "a very potent fighter indeed". On the 19th it was ferried to Farnborough and given the serial number PE882, eventually joining 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight.
