It was still early morning when their 55 Republic F-84 Thunderjet escorts joined the nine B-29 Superfortresses at the rendezvous point. Ahead and far above, 34 North American F-86 Sabres were providing a screen south of the Yalu River to intercept MiGs. Taken from the 49th and 126th Fighter-Bomber Groups, the F-84s were assigned to fight off any enemy aircraft that broke through the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing's Sabres. The much faster jets were forced to slow down and fly extended figure eight and racetrack patterns in order not to get too far ahead of the bomber force.
