Halifax

From a distance, or to the untrained eye, they might have appeared to be the same aircraft. The Handley Page Halifax and the more celebrated Avro Lancaster were bombers of similar size, role and configuration. Together they bore the"brunt of the RAF's heavy bombing campaign against Germany, supported by the even larger Short Stirling, though the latter was built in smaller numbers. Following the tradition of naming heavy bombers after northern cities and towns, the Handley Page design was eventually called the Halifax, after the Yorkshire town, with production beginning across the border at HP's factory in Samlesbury, Lancashire. The site would go on to produce over 2,000 bombers during die war.
