With the outbreak of the Winter War against the Soviet Union in 1939, a desperate need for aircraft led the Finnish Air Force to purchase 30 Gloster Gladiator Mk.II fighters from Britain on December 12. In the event, ten of the 30 were received as a donation and the partly-built biplanes were shipped to Sweden where assembly was completed. From here they were flown to Finland between January 18 and February 16, 1940.
