Acentury ago, the advent of the Great War transformed the prospects of Britain's fledgling aircraft manufacturers, none more so than Edwin Alliott Verdun Roe's Manchester-based company, which took an abbreviated form of his name - Avro - as its brand. In 1914, the business was best described as a small, struggling factory, but by the Armistice it was a multi-faceted industry. First appearing in 1912, the company's Type 500 formed the basis of a practical military aircraft. A year later it had matured into the 504, a revolutionary world-class trainer.
