Flying-boat Haven

While chugging across the waters of Milford Haven in the late 1990s a fisherman looked skyward in exasperation; yet another lobster pot had snagged. A diver investigated and found a three-bladed propeller. He and colleagues discovered a radial engine and then the remains of a Sunderland flying-boat in further descents. The Channel 4 television programme Wreck Detectives brought its team to the Haven in August 2003 and a 1,010hp (753kW) Bristol Pegasus 9-cylinder radial and propeller came to the surface. The salvage became a catalyst for the creation of a unique UK museum.
