Living Ju-88s

Although over 15,000 of the twin-engined bombers were made, only two complete examples are known to survive today. One of these is Junkers Ju 88D-1 430650, currently on display within the World War Two Gallery at the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, Ohio. In the war it was used for long-range, photographic reconnaissance operations by the Romanian Air Force, but was flown to Cyprus by a defecting pilot on July 22, 1943. Initially test flown by the RAF as HK959, the aircraft was later handed over to the USAAF which registered it as FR-1598. It was shipped to its present home in January 1960 and today wears its original Romanian insignia.
