HURRICHANES OVER NORWAY

After the German invasion of Norway on April 9, .1940 Britain sent forces to Norway's central region, but this ill-equipped expedition was withdrawn by the end of the month. A fresh Anglo-French force was dispatched to support and hold the Scandinavian nation's northern sector. The Hurricane-equipped 46 Squadron, under Sqn Ldr 'Bing' Cross, was assigned the task of providing the fighter element alongside 263 Squadron with Gloster Gladiators. Eighteen of No.46's Hurricanes flew from their base at Digby in Lincolnshire to Abbotsinch, Stirlingshire, on May 9 from where they were ferried by lighter [a type of flat-bottomed barge] down the River Clyde and loaded aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious.
