The Lightning entered service with the RAF in December 1959, the first aircraft (XG334) being allocated to the Coltishall-based Air Fighting Development Unit of the Central Fighter Establishment. The distinction of being the type's first operational unit fell to 74 'Tiger' Squadron on June 29,1960. Lightnings served on with the RAF until the final F.6s were stood down in June 1988 at Binbrook, but five were used as high-speed targets by British Aerospace for ADV Tornado AI.24 Foxhunter radar development work at Warton until December 1992.
