Typhoon connection

Page 41 of the May issue's D-Day Preparing the Way article, shows a picture of Hawker Typhoon JR379. My wife's late father, W/O Peter Lough, flew Typhoons in the war with 183 and 609 squadrons, and a check of his logbook indicates he flew this aircraft on two missions on the same day - August 12,1944. Peter was born in 1921 and learned to fly in Canada during 1941 to 1942. On returning to England, he continued his training on Hurricanes and then Typhoons. His logbook suggests that his first operational sortie was on October 9,1943 as part of an escort sweep to Guipavas near Brest. Both flights in JR379 were 'cab rank' [close air support] missions from airfield B7 near Bayeux in France, over the Falaise Gap. The aircraft were armed with rocket projectiles.
