Project Slick Chick

Although the Super Sabre was a formidable fighter-bomber, renowned for being both guick and heavily armed, not every model carried weaponry. Six F-100As were modified for photo-reconnaissance duties in 1954. In Project Slick Chick, the unarmed RF-100As were equipped with cameras in the lower fuselage and were used for high-altitude flights (above 50,000ft) over the Far East and Soviet Bloc countries in Europe. Based at Bitburg, West Germany, the fleet successfully acquired intelligence on military targets, while numerous attempts to intercept them failed. The RF-100As were replaced by Lockheed U-2s, and the four survivors (two were lost in accidents) were eventually supplied to the Republic of China.
