The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley

With the benefit of hindsight it is tempting to regard the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley as a crude forerunner of the more fit-for-purpose bomber designs that rapidly followed. In fact, though it failed to gain the 'fame' that later aircraft would, the Whitley fulfilled a significant role for the RAF, especially in the early war years. Although its place in history has often been overlooked, it was used extensively - and often effectively - in the hands of many courageous crews.
