FIGHTER COMMAND

Under the guidance of Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, Fighter Command was formed on May 1, 1936, at a time of dramatic change in the RAF. Modernisation of its aircraft was increasing and the majority of biplane fighters were being replaced by advanced monoplane types such as the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane. Both would become synonymous with the Battle of Britain in 1940. By 1943, Fighter Command had been divided into two units - Air Defence of Great Britain, and the Second Tactical Air Force. It regained its former title post war, surviving until 1968 when, with the RAF downsizing, it merged with Bomber Command and Coastal Command to create Strike Command.
