By some margin, the F6F Hellcat was the US top scorer in the Pacific. Navy and Marine pilots flew 66,530 combat sorties, resulting in 5,163 aerial victories. Hellcats were not round lacking in the ground attack role either, dropping 6,500 tons of bombs. The type notched up a 13:1 kill ratio against the A6M 'Zero'; no wonder then that it became the premier 'ace' maker in the American inventor)'- there were 305 F6F aces. The all-time lead ace for the navy in the Pacific was Captain David McCampbell with 34 victories in the Hellcat.
