On his return from duty in Korea early in 1954, Bob Broad joined 14 Squadron at Fassberg, West Germany. Along with 98 and 118 Squadrons, it was part of 121 Wing of the 2nd Tactical Air Force, which also included three RAF Regiment units. Fassberg was a large and well-equipped former Luftwaffe station, isolated within the pine forests of the Lueneburg Heide. Broad was in command of 'A' Flight with eight Venom FB.ls and a Vampire T. 11 trainer. Having earlier flown Vampires, he found the conversion to the Venom straightforward. One significant difference between the two was the transposition of the radio press-to-transmit button and the firing button. For a brief period the pilots flew each type, so it was inevitable that there was the occasional mishap on the weapons range!
