The final de Havilland Venom variant developed for RAF use was the FB.4. The single-seat fighter-bomber was powered by a 5,1 50lb/st (22.9kN) DH Ghost 105 turbojet, and was fitted with an ejection seat, powered ailerons and various structural modifications. It was the second most widely produced type of Venom, with 250 made (375 FB.1s were built). The first FB.4 made its debut flight on December 29, 1953, some four years after the Venom prototype. The new jet entered RAF service in 1955. Its modified tailplane made it a more stable machine in flight and its more powerful engine improved performance. It was the last land-based version of the Venom to fly in British hands, although Sea Venoms continued to serve with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm until 1970.
