While Britain was celebrating Victory in Europe Day on May 8, 1945, in South East Asia and the Pacific the war against Japan continued relentlessly. In the Indian Ocean the Japanese maintained a garrison on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and on the morning after VE Day, an evacuation of this exposed outpost was initiated.
