The RAF handed over its responsibility for search and rescue (SAR) operations to civilian contractors on October 4, bringing the curtain down on an era that had spanned almost 75 years. An event, Farewell To RAF Search and Rescue, was held on October 13 at Chivenor, Devon, home to 'A' Flight of 22 Squadron, the last RAF unit to perform this role. It was the final opportunity for the media to see an air force SAR demo, which was flown using Westland Sea King HAR.3A ZH544. After a short period spent training personnel in the Falkland Islands, 'A' Flight finally stood down in November. The Directorate of Air Sea Rescue was formed during World War Two following the loss of more than 200 airmen in the Channel during the Battle of Britain. From February 6,1941 the RAF was tasked with providing SAR cover over land and sea. It later went on to share duties with counterparts in the Royal Navy.
