Peter Arnold says in his letter (September issue) that the Jim Smith collection here in Montana is a very private collection. Not quite true, as he has a curator and visits can be made, but you have to make an appointment. Unfortunately, Jim has not flown the Seafire for several years. Ken Ellis wrote a good article on the Beverley, but didn't mention the time when ten of them were earmarked for rebuilding by reskinning the wings - these had been eroded by the exhaust and 115/145 octane fuel. At least two were at Dishforth [North Yorkshire] in early 1964 and were stripped prior to being reskinned. The story was that they were being rebuilt in case the Short Belfast failed.
