The northwest Italian city of Turin is often considered the cradle of the country's aviation industry. From the beginning of the 19th century, the surrounding area became home to some of the first (and most important) Italian aircraft manufacturers, including Piaggio and Caproni.With firms lobbying for peacetime orders, aircraft and defence industry events were vital for promoting Italy's aeronautical pride and prowess during the 1960s. At that time, the Italians had a natural orientation towards the Mediterranean market to meet both geographical and cultural requirements.
