The Battle of Britain -officially recognised as taking place between July 10 and October 30,1940 - was one of the defining moments in British history. But despite being battered by a formidable foe, the nation, through dogged determination, fortitude and great valour, ultimately prevailed. Had the fight been lost, then as wartime leader Winston Churchill said on June 18,1940: "...the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age". Thankfully, with the battle won, the seeds were sewn for the eventual defeat of Hitler and his henchmen.
