The man could have been a teacher. At least that was what his parents wanted for him. But he had decided otherwise: he would be a pilot. In 1949, Jean-Marie Saget entered the Ecole de l'Air, the officer's school of the Armee de l'Air (French Air Force). He was part of the first peacetime crop of French students sent to the US for training, arriving at Waco Army Air Field, Texas, with just 35 hours' flight time on the Morane-Saulnier MS.315 and MS.230. Of this American debut, Saget said: "I remember very well my arrival in Waco. The ramp was as long as the runway and full of aircraft, 60 lines of four T-6s each!"
