Many light aircraft pilots look in awe at airline pilots and admire their skill at guiding a huge aircraft full of hundreds of people for thousands of miles before safely landing at the destination in all but the worst weather. However, airline pilots have many resources at their disposal. Airline pilots have lots of training and experience going for them. They have strict regulations and standard operating procedures they have to operate by. Many fly newer equipment that is well maintained. They also have a capable dispatcher who does much of the flight planning, including checking the weather and performing the weight and balance calculations. The dispatcher is also available throughout the flight for updates or to help with any problems that occur. Finally, since airliners are flown by a minimum crew of two, each airline pilot has another experienced pilot as a resource at all times.
