With delivery of its new FlightMax EX500 Avidyne has checked off the top two items on the long wishlist of information I want in the cockpit—reliable and timely delivery of real-time weather data, and easy to use electronic display of current Jeppesen approach charts. Avidyne is the company that invented the multifunction display for existing propeller airplanes when it introduced the original Flight-Max in the late 1990s. At that time there were a number of moving map displays that showed a GPS-derived aircraft position over an electronic display of a chart, and the FlightMax did that. But Avidynes plan from the beginning was to include the display of weather radar, if the airplane was equipped, along with Stormscope lightning data, and eventually terrain and traffic warning as those systems became available.
