摘要

Whenever a magazine publisher or editor decides a redesign is in order, they usually do it to stay a step ahead of the competition or make a distinctive mark. When I took over as editor-in-chief six months ago, I told you to expect big changes. You now realize I wasn't joking. Not all the reasons for embarking on a redesign, of course, are good ones. By itself, a change at the top of the masthead is almost never justification enough for a wholesale transformation of a publication. So why do it? Let me start by noting that what you hold in your hands actually represents something that goes beyond a typical redesign. We've gone the route of a major overhaul. Almost nothing about the magazine was deemed too sacrosanct to change or challenge. We also refused to follow anyone else's lead. The fundamental question in every decision the editorial team made through this process was how do we take a good magazine and make it great again?
