Large shoes to fill: When Frank Fanelli called and asked if I'd agree to write Small Talk, I had mixed emotions. I spent over two years as the editor-in-chief of another model aviation magazine and, well, I'd had my fill of debating with non-modelers about what was and was not appropriate for publication in a model aviation magazine. On the other hand, FLYING MODELS has always been rock solid in providing balanced coverage of model aviation. Maybe more important, though, and the reason I couldn't say no, was that I was being asked to write Small Talk, Randy Randolph's column. I have few heroes in my life. Four of them come to mind. They are Walt Mooney, Bill Hannan, Nick Ziroli, and Randy Randolph. Certainly, these men have, through their writing in model magazines, taught me much about building and flying model airplanes. But all have done so much more. These men have taught me what model aviation is all about. They've taught me that model aviation is least about flying model airplanes, as fun as that is, and most about building them and socializing with like-minded people.
