Last month, we discussed the basics of "old school" right thrust and vertical up-line trimming. This month we continue by describing the relatively new practice of coupling high throttle into right rudder for dealing with that ol' demon, torque. Before launching into the process, let's talk about a few of the issues that make up the background in the trimming landscape. About half-way into last month's installment, I mentioned the need to avoid inadvertent aileron input, while pulling up or pushing from inverted, to a vertical climb. The natural tendency for Mode 2 pilots is to pull the ailerons to the right when pulling up, and sometimes to the left while pushing to a climb from inverted. The problem is a real one, and we approach the solution from two angles. The first is practice…isn't it always? This kind of stick position awareness is actually a vital piloting skill and will come in handy in a great many maneuver elements, especially the ones where you intentionally blend elevator and aileron inputs. Awareness is the issue, not muscle-memory.
